Five Books That Invite You to Travel

Have you ever felt like you know a place without having visited it, simply because you read about it? I know I have, even if the place doesn’t exist (Hogwarts *cough cough*). And for that reason, I’m here to recommend some travel books that will help you discover all the corners of the world you’d like to visit. These famous books of traveling that I’m recommending all have one common bond: the love of travel. And on top of that, they’re all great works to take with you if you decide that reading about traveling just isn’t enough.

  • Five Weeks in a Balloon by Jules Verne

If you want to know how to enjoy reading while you’re on a trip, grab cool beverage and curl up to this curious book. This story features a couple of curious travelers who decide to travel across Africa with the help of a balloon. They have a few bumps along the way on their journey, and it’s all they can do to hope that their perseverance is enough to get them through.

  • Arabian Sands by Wilfred Thesiger

This work describes the author’s travels across the entire Empty Quarter of the Arabian Peninsula. Throughout his journey, Thesiger learns about the Bedu people as well as some of the other inhabitants of the Arabian Peninsula. The work does an outstanding job of capturing the existence of these beautiful people.

  • Journey to Portugal by José Saramago

This work of non-fiction happens to be written by a Nobel Prize-winning author, so you know you’re going to get to discover the world of reading and visiting new places with this book. Saramago skillfully captures his extensive traveling throughout the breadth and width of Portugal, leaving you with an experience you’ll never forget.

  • Down and Out in Paris and London by George Orwell

If you’re okay with a more somber tone, this book is incredibly written. It’s a two-part memoir that opens up a conversation about the poverty that existed in Paris and London in the early 1900s. The story follows the narrator’s journey throughout the two cities.

  • Danube by Claudio Magris

This non-fiction piece allows you to follow the author through his travels along the Danube River. This river flows through ten entire countries across Europe, which gives you a lot of new places to know. In every town Magris visits, he raises ghosts and questions the living to better understand the rich culture of Europe.
